Abstract

Abstract: The low level of empathy among junior high school students is a problem that requires serious attention, given that empathy is an important aspect of emotional intelligence that supports students' social development. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of group guidance using role playing techniques in improving the empathy of junior high school students. This study employed a quantitative method with a pre-experimental research type and a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The sample consisted of 10 students selected using purposive sampling based on the lowest empathy scores from 86 seventh-grade students. The instrument used was Davis's Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) empathy questionnaire, which had been tested for validity and reliability with a Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.907. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. The results showed a Z value of -2.823 with an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.005 < 0.05, so the alternative hypothesis was accepted. All students experienced an increase in empathy scores after receiving the treatment, with an average improvement of 10.6 points. These findings prove that group guidance with role playing techniques is effective in improving the empathy of junior high school students and has implications for the development of more interactive counseling and guidance services to enhance students' social skills and concern for others.
