Abstract

Poetry reading fluency is an important component of oral literacy in Indonesian language learning, encompassing accurate pronunciation, appropriate tempo, effective pausing, intonation, and expression. However, many students still experience difficulties in integrating these technical and expressive aspects when reading poetry. This study aims to describe the implementation of aso'an Al-Qur'an as an oral fluency training strategy and its contribution to improving poetry reading fluency among Grade XI students at SMA Tahfidz Darul Ulum Banyuanyar. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach using a best-practice design. The participants consisted of 30 Grade XI students. Data were collected through observations, fluency assessment rubrics, intonation and expression rubrics, field notes, and learning documentation. Data were analyzed descriptively by comparing students’ reading performance before and after the implementation of the strategy. The findings indicate that the practice of aso'an Al-Qur'an contributed to improvements in pronunciation fluency, tempo stability, pause accuracy, intonation, expression, and students’ self-confidence in reading poetry. The findings also suggest that phonological and prosodic skills developed through regular Qur’anic recitation practices can be transferred to literary reading activities. This study highlights the potential of integrating contextual religious literacy practices into language and literature learning as an innovative strategy for strengthening students’ oral literacy and poetry reading performance.
