Abstract

This article examines the relationship between postmodernism, religious plurality, and modern Qur’anic interpretation in Indonesia through a tafsir study of QS. al-Kāfirūn. Indonesia’s socio-religious context is characterized by high religious diversity, which frequently raises tensions related to claims of religious truth and tolerance. This condition requires an interpretative framework that is capable of responding to plurality without dissolving normative religious boundaries. The purpose of this study is to analyze how modern Indonesian Qur’anic interpretations of QS. al-Kāfirūn construct the concept of religious tolerance within a pluralistic society, and how postmodern perspectives contribute to understanding interpretive diversity. This research employs a qualitative library-based method using a thematic and contextual tafsir approach, analyzing classical and modern Indonesian interpretations of QS. al-Kāfirūn. The findings indicate that modern tafsir in Indonesia generally emphasizes tolerance as a form of peaceful coexistence rather than theological relativism, while postmodernism functions as an analytical lens to critique singular truth claims in interpretation. This study contributes to contemporary Qur’anic studies by clarifying the limits and possibilities of tolerance in Islamic interpretation within a plural religious context. In conclusion, QS. al-Kāfirūn supports interreligious tolerance without negating Islamic doctrinal principles.
