Abstract

This study critically examines the thought of Diogenes of Sinope as a radical expression of Cynic philosophy that challenges social conventions, materialism, and authority as foundations of human life. Employing a qualitative approach through critical-philosophical analysis and interpretive hermeneutics, this study does not aim to measure phenomena empirically but rather to interpret, critique, and conceptually evaluate Diogenes’ ideas and their relevance to the philosophy of science and fashion studies as a cultural system. The study reinterprets Diogenes’ views within the framework of modern philosophy of science while relating them to contemporary issues in fashion as a system of cultural values. The analysis demonstrates that Diogenes’ critique is significant as a marker of the dangers of dogmatism, the commodification of knowledge, and the domination of social norms. However, the extremity of his position generates ethical contradictions that cannot be directly applied to scientific practice or fashion. A total rejection of norms and materiality neglects the social, institutional, and psychological dimensions essential to the production of knowledge and the construction of identity through fashion. This study concludes that Diogenes’ thought is more appropriately positioned as a corrective ethical framework rather than an epistemological model, and that its relevance to fashion lies in encouraging reflective, ethical, and humanistic practices without falling into nihilism or anti-structuralism. The main finding of this research indicates that Diogenes’ thought does not function as an epistemological model but operates as an ethical-corrective critique of dogmatism, the institutionalization of knowledge, and the commodification of values, thereby enriching philosophical reflection in the philosophy of science and contemporary visual culture. This study offers a conceptual contribution by bridging the discourse between philosophy of science and fashion, while expanding the understanding of radical critique as a foundation for value transformation in contemporary visual culture.
