Abstract

Cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) are the most common congenital abnormalities of the head and neck. The psychosocial issues (e.g., depression or major depressive disorder) of children with CL/P during the developmental period affect normal social interactions, which can increase the likelihood of low self-esteem and shyness. The study evaluated depressive symptoms and their association with demographic factors and cleft type among children with CL/P aged 7–12 years. A total of 128 children with and without CL/P were observed to have increased risk of depressive symptoms using the children’s depression inventory (CDI) questionnaire. The chi-square test was used for statistical analysis. A total of 128 responses from 128 participants were included. Thirteen participants from the CL/P group and nine from the non-CL/P group experienced depressive symptoms. The relationship between depressive symptoms in patients with CL/P was not influenced by sex (p = 0.48), age (p = 0.07), being an only child (p = 1), or cleft-type (p = 0.48). In conclusion, the prevalence of depressive symptoms in patients with CL/P was 20.3%. The association between depressive symptoms and CL/P was not influenced by sex, age, being an only child, or cleft-type.
