Abstract

This study was motivated by the importance of instructional innovations capable of enhancing students’ active engagement in the learning process, particularly in Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) classes. One method considered effective is the peer-tutoring method, in which students act as tutors to help their peers understand the learning material. In basketball, the free throw skill is a crucial technique that determines success in scoring points; however, students’ ability to execute free throws remains relatively low. This study aims to analyze the effect of the peer-tutoring learning method on the development of basketball free-throw skills among eighth-grade students at a junior high school in Surabaya. The study employed a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research subjects consisted of 19 students selected using purposive sampling from a population of 37 students. Data were collected through a free-throw performance test using an assessment sheet covering eight evaluation aspects with a scoring scale of 1–4. The research procedure began with a pretest, followed by the intervention instruction using the peer-tutoring method in small groups and concluded with a posttest. The research data were analyzed descriptively using IBM SPSS Statistics 25. The results showed that the application of the peer-tutoring method had a positive effect on the development of students’ free-throw skills. This method helps students more easily understand movement techniques through interaction and guidance from peers, making the learning process more active, collaborative, and effective. This study is expected to serve as a recommendation for physical education teachers in implementing innovative learning models to improve learning outcomes in basic basketball skills.
