Currently, the communal space that’s available in the area has not satisfied the universal principle of accessibilities, thus limiting the social participation for people with disabilities in the community life. This community service is conducted through a participative approach which involves the residents in the area, people with disabilities, and other stakeholders. This activity mainly involves field survey to identify physical barrier, focused group discussion to identify the users’ needs, and the development of a design prototype for the communal space which fits the universal accessibility design principles. This activity is analyzed through comparison between the knowledge and the approval of an inclusive communal space, and through the comparison between knowledge and the approval of the respondents in regards to the needs of the communal space in an inclusive housing environment. The result of this activity is a design recommendation for a communal space that could be accessed by every group, which includes several facility such as a ramp, ergonomic seating area, and an audiovisual information system. Aside from giving a design solution, this activity also promotes collective awareness towards the importance of an inclusive environment. This activity aims to be a model for the development of an inclusive housing environment, and to promote collaboration between academics and the community in realizing an environment that’s just and sustainable for all members of the community.
