Abstract

This article aims to examine the ethical dilemmas frequently experienced by scientists in the fields of industry and the military. When confronted with conflicting values, scientists are required to make moral decisions in which choosing one value entails sacrificing another value that is equally important. Such dilemmas bring together deontological obligations to tell the truth, utilitarian considerations regarding the greatest benefit for society, and the demands of virtue ethics, which emphasize integrity and moral responsibility. The tension between scientific openness and the interests of the majority or institutional priorities constitutes the core of ethical dilemmas in contemporary scientific practice. Through a critical-philosophical research method grounded in the ideas of David B. Resnik, this study seeks to uncover various ethical violations, such as data fabrication, the misuse of research subjects, and involvement in destructive research that exacerbates the crisis of public trust in science. The findings indicate that standards of ethical conduct are crucial, as science is a collaborative practice that depends on trust, both among researchers and between science and society. In industrial and military contexts, ethical principles such as honesty, transparency, and freedom often clash with demands for confidentiality driven by commercial interests and national security concerns. Although confidentiality may be justified in certain contexts, it is not absolute; whistleblowing can be morally justified when it aims to prevent public harm. Furthermore, confidentiality in industrial and military science carries ideological and political dimensions that have the potential to reinforce economic hegemony and the concentration of state power. This study concludes that strengthening the principles of scientific ethics, accompanied by effective mechanisms of public oversight, is key to maintaining the integrity of science
