Abstract

Direct current (DC) motors are widely used in industrial applications due to their simple structure and ease of speed control. However, load variations can cause speed drops and instability, so a control system is required to maintain motor speed at a desired reference value. This study presents the modeling and simulation of a DC motor speed control system using a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller and a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) based on MATLAB Simulink. The DC motor used in this research is a Pittman Series GM 1490, which is mathematically modeled in the form of a transfer function. The PID controller parameters are tuned using the Ziegler–Nichols method, while the fuzzy controller is designed using membership functions and a rule base based on linguistic logic. Simulation results show that the PID controller reaches steady state faster than the fuzzy controller with a settling time of 0.3253 seconds, but produces an overshoot of 0.0529%. Meanwhile, the fuzzy controller provides a smoother and more adaptive response, although with a relatively longer settling time. These results indicate that the PID controller offers the best performance in terms of response speed, while the fuzzy controller has strong potential as an adaptive control alternative.
