Abstract

Injury is one of the greatest challenges athletes face. It not only disrupts physical functioning, but also affects psychological well-being and the sustainability of a sporting career. This study aimed to describe and analyse the resilience process among athletes after injury using a qualitative multiple case study design. Five athletes from karate, sepak takraw, muaythai, futsal, and boxing within the Faculty of Sport Science and Health (FIKK), Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM), participated in the study. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and field notes, and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that the early stage of injury is marked by negative emotional responses with strong socio-cultural dimensions. During recovery, athletes encountered boredom, internal conflicts, and social pressure. Resilience emerged through the interplay of internal factors (self-efficacy, emotion regulation, and mental toughness) and external factors (support from family, coaches, and teammates). All participants demonstrated post-injury growth as the highest manifestation of resilience. This study contributes a context-sensitive model of post-injury resilience dynamics that reflects Indonesia’s collectivist cultural setting.
