This study is motivated by the low level of student learning activeness in social studies (IPS) learning, which is still teacher-centered. The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of the discussion method and analyze the improvement of student learning activeness in grade V at SDN 14 Baruh Bukik. This research employed classroom action research (CAR) with a descriptive quantitative approach conducted in two cycles. The subjects of the study were 17 students. Data were collected through observation and documentation, and analyzed using the percentage of student activeness. The results showed that the implementation of the discussion method significantly improved student learning activeness, from 65% in the first cycle (fairly active category) to 82% in the second cycle (very active category). Improvements were observed in indicators such as asking questions, answering, expressing opinions, and cooperation. In addition, the learning atmosphere became more interactive and students were more confident in expressing their ideas. Therefore, the discussion method is proven to be effective in improving student learning activeness in social studies learning as well as developing critical thinking and social skills.
