Abstract

This study examines the historiographical methodology of Jamal al-Din Ibn al-Qifti (568–646 AH / 1172–1248 CE), one of the foremost historians of the 6th and 7th Hijri centuries. The study aims to uncover the characteristics of his historical approach, his sources, and his scholarly contributions. Employing a descriptive-analytical method, the research analyzes his historical writings and intellectual biography, highlighting his pivotal role in advancing the craft of historiography. The study concludes that Ibn al-Qifti established a comprehensive and rigorous historical methodology characterized by eight distinguishing features: the integration of events and biographies within a single work; the broadening of historical inquiry to encompass diverse nations and sciences; the use of isnad (chain of transmission) in reporting; attention to the history of smaller families; linking the history of physicians with philosophers; the richness and diversity of historical material; systematic documentation of deaths and events; and the repetition of biographical entries for deeper verification. The significance of this study lies in its being the first comprehensive analytical investigation into Ibn al-Qifti's historical methodology as a whole.
