Abstract

Food crops must always be prioritized for the community's basic needs to ensure food supplies. Staple crops such as rice, corn, and soybeans have long been a top priority for national food security, with their productivity and quality consistently receiving government attention. Job's tears, as an alternative food crop, have begun to be tested for their high nutritional value, approaching that of the main staple crop. However, one obstacle to Job's tears cultivation is the thick seed coat, which inhibits germination. Soaking at different temperatures can crack the tough seed coat. This study aims to determine the physiological responses (flowering time and chlorophyll content), yield components, and yield of Job's tears using soaking at varying temperatures. This research was conducted at Rancaekek Village Garden, Bandung Regency, from June 2025 to February 2026 using a Randomized Block Design (RBD), namely soaking using different temperatures. The treatments in this study were s0 (without soaking), s1 (plain water), s2 (temperature 30°C), s3 (temperature 40°C), and s4 (temperature 50°C), with each treatment repeated 5 times. Observations in this study consisted of observations of yield components, consisting of the number of panicles per tiller, the number of seeds per clump, the weight of 100 grains, and observations of yields, consisting of the seed weight per clump, the seed weight per plot, and the harvest index. The results showed that soaking seeds in warm water had an effect on the number of panicles, the number of seeds, and seed weight. Soaking seeds in warm water at 40 oC showed the best effect on yield components and yield observations. The highest yield was achieved with the soaking treatment at 40°C, at 287.11 g per plant, or approximately 5.4 tons/ha
