Abstract

Various studies and learning practices indicate that some students still experience difficulties in recognizing letters, combining syllables, and understanding simple reading. Therefore, a learning approach that can accommodate the diversity of students' learning characteristics is needed more optimally. This study aims to analyze the effect of the multisensory method on the early reading skills of elementary school students by testing its effectiveness at the group and individual levels. The study used a quantitative approach with an experimental method combined with a Single Subject Research (SSR) design. The research subjects consisted of second-grade students who were grouped into experimental and control classes, and 11 students who were analyzed individually using the SSR design. Data were collected through an early reading ability test using a reading test sheet as the research instrument. The obtained data were analyzed using nonparametric statistics and descriptive analysis to identify changes in students' reading abilities comprehensively. The results of the study indicate that the multisensory method has a positive effect on improving early reading abilities, both at the group and individual levels. The implications of this study indicate that integrating visual, auditory, and kinesthetic stimulation in reading instruction can be an effective strategy to accommodate the diversity of student learning styles while strengthening the development of basic literacy in elementary schools. These findings also expand the empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of multisensory methods evaluated simultaneously through experimental and Single Subject Research (SSR) approaches.
