Abstract

expressing individual freedom, and serving as an effective tool for voicing discontent with various aspects of social, political, and cultural life. Since its emergence, rock music has not only provided entertainment but has also offered a space for its fans to express their views and emotions, often in opposition to established social structures. One of the most visible expressions of rock music’s influence is the clothing style of its fans, which has become an integral part of their identity. In the rock music scene, fashion serves not only as a striking visual display but also as a medium for conveying deeper ideological messages, including freedom of expression and the rejection of conformity. This article examines the relationship between rock music, fashion, and self-expression among students at FISIP Unhas, highlighting how clothing choices—often featuring black colors, skull imagery, and designs inspired by rock subcultures—function as forms of resistance to established sociopolitical norms. Using Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus and praxis, the article explains how students’ social backgrounds and life experiences shape their behavioral patterns, attitudes, and preferences for clothing styles that reflect critical positions toward existing social structures. Habitus plays a crucial role in shaping forms of self-expression that move beyond conventional norms, while praxis refers to the concrete actions through which students express their positions in everyday life. In this context, clothing becomes a central means through which FISIP Unhas students assert independent identities and communicate their willingness to challenge injustice and social inequality. Overall, the article demonstrates that clothing styles inspired by rock music are not merely fashion trends, but expressions of social attitudes, ideologies, and values formed through broader social and political experiences.
