Abstract

Cultural values guide how communities interpret basic life problems. Among Sasak transmigrants in Benteng Village, poverty has shaped practices that are often misunderstood by neighbouring groups. This study examines Sasak cultural value orientations and their relationship to stereotypes.Ethnographic research in Benteng Village used observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data were interpreted using Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck’s value-orientation framework and the concept of stereotypes. Sasak residents view hardship as a condition that can be improved through persistent work. Work focuses on basic needs and future security; agricultural dependence encourages adaptation to nature; and strong kinship promotes reliance on fellow Sasak. Outsiders often label these practices as laziness, aggressiveness, and a lack of education. Such judgements reflect limited interaction and overlook how poverty and local meanings shape decisions. These practices are therefore better understood as culturally meaningful responses to structural constraints than as fixed ethnic traits.
