Astaxanthin is a natural carotenoid with strong antioxidant activity and has potential as an active ingredient in topical cream formulations to protect the skin from premature aging caused by oxidative stress. This literature review aimed to evaluate astaxanthin cream formulations based on concentration, physical characteristics, and stability. The study analyzed eight scientific articles obtained from Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. The results showed that astaxanthin concentrations ranged from 0.02% to 1%, with formulations demonstrating acceptable physical characteristics, including organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesiveness, and good stability based on the freeze–thaw test. In addition, astaxanthin exhibited antioxidant, anti-aging, photoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antimelanogenic activities. In conclusion, astaxanthin has promising potential as an active ingredient in topical cream formulations due to its good stability and beneficial effects on skin health.
