Abstract

Powder coating is a surface finishing process in which a film coating is applied to a metal surface and subsequently heated to achieve polymerization and curing of the coating. Negatively charged powder particles are sprayed onto the workpiece. To obtain optimal adhesion and coating durability, the material is subjected to specific pretreatment processes, such as sanding, which aims to enhance the adhesive force between the coating powder and the metal substrate. This study aims to determine the effect of curing temperature on adhesion and coating strength in the powder coating process, particularly for specimens with and without an epoxy primer layer. The adhesion test was conducted using the cross-cut method in accordance with ASTM D3359 / ISO 2409 standards, with curing temperature variations of 200°C, 220°C, and 250°C. The test results showed that curing temperatures of 200°C and 220°C produced the best adhesion performance for specimens without an epoxy layer, as no coating detachment was observed (scale 0). In contrast, the use of an epoxy primer at all temperature variations resulted in very poor adhesion due to the incompatibility of the thermal characteristics between conventional epoxy and thermosetting powder coatings during the curing process.
