<![CDATA[This study aims to: (1) Identify the forms of joy students experience during social interactions. (2) Identify the forms of sadness students experience during social interactions. (3) Determine how students interpret their feelings of joy in social interactions. (4) Determine how students interpret their feelings of sadness in social interactions. (5) To determine how students’ perspectives, informed by the teachings of Kawruh Jiwa as expounded by Ki Ageng Suryomentaram, can help students interpret joy and sadness (bungah susah) in social interactions (sesrawungan). Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological methodology, this study explores students’ subjective experiences in interpreting feelings of joy and sadness when interacting on campus. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with current students at Sanata Dharma University who are familiar with and have studied Kawruh Jiwa. Research findings indicate that feelings of joy generally arise when students feel accepted, valued, and receive responses that meet their expectations; conversely, feelings of sadness arise when their opinions are ignored or the responses they receive fall short of their expectations. However, through an understanding of the teachings of kawruh jiwa, students view happiness and sadness as temporary and closely related to the dynamics of desire (karep), which can expand (mulur) and contract (mungkret). This awareness helps them avoid getting lost in their emotions, enables them to better accept others’ responses, and fosters calmer, more reflective social interactions.]]>
