Abstract

Syntactic errors in Arabic-language journal abstracts persist even after editorial review, yet systematic post-editorial analysis of Arabic syntactic structures in nationally indexed journals remains virtually absent from the literature. This study aims to identify the types, frequency, distribution, and recurring patterns of syntactic errors in Arabic-language scientific journal abstracts, and to examine their implications for academic writing instruction and editorial practice. A qualitative content analysis was applied to 23 abstracts from five Sinta 2–4 indexed journals Al Mahara, Al-Ta’rib, Arabiyatuna, Arabiyya, and Tadris Al-‘Arabiyyah published between 2021 and 2025, using Corder’s Error Analysis framework and Ellis’ interlanguage theory. The analysis followed four stages: identification, classification, explanation, and evaluation. Thirty-two syntactic errors were identified across nine categories. Phrase Structure Errors were the most frequent (25.0%), followed by Noun Phrase Errors (18.80%), Spelling and Word Choice Errors (12.50% each), and letter jar, Morphology, and i‘rāb errors (9.40% each), Redundancy (6.20%), and Word Order (3.10%). Error patterns are predominantly linked to Indonesian language interference, particularly in phrase formation, grammatical agreement (muthābaqah), and lexical selection, indicating that Arabic grammatical rules have not been fully internalized. This study contributes: (1) a typological mapping of syntactic errors in Arabic posteditorial abstracts, (2) a causal analysis tracing errors to interlingual interference and incomplete rule internalization, and (3) evidence-based recommendations for editorial review and Arabic academic writing instruction. Future research should expand the corpus to Sinta 1 and internationally indexed journals and examine the efficacy of targeted instructional interventions.
