Abstract

Many research related to the manufacture of composite boards using environmentally friendly raw materials has been done. Various eco-friendly materials have been proven capable of producing composite boards with quality not inferior to those made from synthetic raw materials. In Indonesia, coconut fiber has great potential to be developed as a raw material for composite products, while tanin and latex are also considered prospective for adhesives. This research examined the quality of composite boards made from coconut fiber with tanin and latex-based adhesives. The composite board manufacturing was carried out by varying the particle size factors (passed 40 mesh, retained at 60 mesh, and passed 60 mesh, retained at 80 mesh), board thickness (0.5 and 1 cm), and adhesive amount (0, 5, and 10%). The pressing conditions used were 170°C for 20 minutes. The composite boards were then tested for water content, density, thickness swelling, flexural strength, internal adhesive strength, and screw-holding strength in accordance with SNI 03-2105. The results showed that particle board with a particle size of passed 40 mesh retained 60 mesh, a thickness of 1 cm, and an adhesive amount of 10% had relatively better board characteristics compared to a board with a particle size of passed 60 mesh retained 80 mesh, a thickness of 0.5 cm, and an adhesive amount of 0% and 5%. The test results showed there was a need to do further research in order to improve the quality of coconut coir particleboard bonded with tannin-latex adhesive, as the other board properties, except internal bond strength and moisture content, had not fulfilled the requirement of SNI 03-2105 yet.
