Abstract

Background: The misuse of antibiotics is a major trigger for antibiotic resistance, one of the world's biggest health threats. Pharmacies hold the key in delivering accurate antibiotic information and services. This study aims to measure the understanding, views, and actions of pharmacy technical staff in Balinese pharmacies regarding antibiotics, while also investigating what influences their behavior. This cross-sectional survey was conducted from September to December 2024 in 9 regions of Bali, collecting data via questionnaires about knowledge, attitudes, and practices. Analysis shows that the majority (64.2%) of pharmaceutical technical staff have good knowledge about antibiotics, and almost all (96.9%) strongly agree with the rational use of antibiotics. However, there is a serious exception: 11.95% of them still dispense antibiotics without a doctor's prescription, a practice that risks worsening resistance. In conclusion, although pharmacy technical staff in Bali have a strong knowledge base and attitude, there are still gaps in practice that need to be urgently addressed through continuous and equitable education to prevent the increase of antibiotic resistance.
