This research aimed to explore the challenges faced by English teachers in implementing role play technique to improve students’ speaking skills and the strategies used to overcome them. The research method used was basic qualitative research design with four Senior High School English teachers as participants. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview and analyzed using thematic analysis. To ensure credibility and validity, this research used data triangulation to compare information from each source or informant. The research results showed that Senior High School English teachers faced various challenges. The challenges they faced stemmed from three sources: students, teachers, and the learning environment. These challenges included differences in student behaviors toward role play, lack of student readiness and focus, teacher preparation, adjusting the time allocation, managing class dynamics during role play activities, and classroom conditions. To overcome these emerging challenges, the teachers applied preventive approach and intervention approach, namely scaffolding, repetition, gamification, and giving warnings.
