Empowering Muslim Women for Environmental Sustainability through the Mustika Darling Program

Abstract

Environmental issues are global challenges that require the involvement of various actors including religious organizations. Nahdlatul Ulama Muslimat, through the Mustika Darling program (Muslimat Cantik Sadar Lingkungan) introduces a model of Muslim women’s empowerment oriented toward environmental sustainability. This program is significant because it integrates religious values local wisdom and concrete actions in waste management and reforestation. While studies on eco-pesantren are widely available research specifically on the role of Muslimat NU in environmental movements remains limited. This study aims to fill this gap. This article employs a qualitative approach with a case study design focusing on the implementation of the Mustika Darling program in several regions using interviews observation and documentation. Data were analyzed through reduction presentation and verification. The findings reveal that the program enhances Muslim women’s ecological awareness strengthens community independence in waste management and fosters synergy with local governments in promoting less waste events. Thus, Mustika Darling can be considered a model of Muslim women’s empowerment grounded in Islamic ecotheology and local wisdom, contributing to the achievement of the SDGs.
