Abstract

This study examines directive illocutionary speech acts in the dialogue of the animated series Masameer Season 2 Episode 1 from a pragmatic perspective. The research addresses the limited studies on directive speech acts in Arabic audiovisual media, particularly regarding the relationship between linguistic forms and pragmatic functions. The objective of this study is to identify types of directive speech acts and their realization strategies. A descriptive qualitative method was employed using non-participatory observation and transcription of dialogue data, analyzed based on Searle’s speech act theory and Blum-Kulka’s direct and indirect strategy framework. The findings reveal 64 directive utterances consisting of commanding, demanding, challenging, advising, and suggesting forms, realized through both direct and indirect strategies. The study concludes that directive meanings in Arabic dialogue are shaped by linguistic structure, social relations, and communicative context, reflecting complex contemporary social communication practices.
