Abstract

Although Orpa’s personality in the film Woman from Rote Island represents the complexities of family conflict, patriarchal culture, and the struggle to uphold justice, studies analyzing it based on Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory remain limited. This study aimed to describe the personality of Orpa, the main character, based on the personality structures of the id, ego, and superego. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method with a content analysis approach. The data source was the film Woman from Rote Island, while the research data comprised Orpa’s dialogue, actions, expressions, and gestures that represented her personality structure. Data were collected through observation, close examination and note-taking, dialogue transcription, screenshot documentation, and coding using coding cards. The data were analyzed through the stages of identification, classification, interpretation based on Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that the id was represented through Orpa’s emotional impulses and instincts to protect her family. The ego was evident in her ability to make rational decisions when confronting customary pressures and patriarchal culture, while the superego was reflected in her commitment to moral values, justice, and humanity by continuing to pursue legal remedies despite various social pressures. This study concludes that Orpa’s personality is constructed through a balance among the id, ego, and superego, thereby representing a resilient, courageous, rational, and principled woman in her struggle for truth and justice. These findings contribute to the development of literary psychology studies, particularly the application of psychoanalytic theory in analyzing representations of female characters’ personalities in film.
