This research aims to analyze students' errors in solving volume and surface area problems using Newman Theory. This research used a descriptive qualitative method which was carried out at SMP Negeri 38 Medan with research subjects of 26 class IX students. Data collection techniques are carried out through written tests, interviews and documentation. The research instrument is in the form of 4 questions regarding the volume and surface area of spatial figures. Data analysis was carried out based on Newman's five stages, namely reading, understanding the problem (comprehension), transformation, process skills and writing the final answer (encoding). The research results showed that the most dominant errors made by students were process skill errors with a percentage of 44.2%. Furthermore, errors in writing the final answer (encoding) were 35.5%, transformation errors were 19.2%, and errors in understanding the problem (comprehension) were 14.4%. Meanwhile, at the reading stage, no errors were found with a percentage of 0%. Based on the results of the interview, it was discovered that students still had difficulty carrying out calculations, determining the correct formula, and writing the final answer completely. Therefore, learning is needed that places more emphasis on understanding concepts and accuracy in solving mathematics problems.
