This study aimed to determine the effect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on the mathematical representation ability of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 136 Pekanbaru in solving mixed fraction word problems. This study used a quantitative approach with a Quasi-Experimental research type and a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The research sample consisted of an experimental class and a control class. The data collection technique used a mathematical representation ability test. Data analysis was carried out through normality tests, homogeneity tests, hypothesis tests, and the N-Gain Score test. The results showed that there was an effect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on students’ mathematical representation ability. The hypothesis test results showed a significance value of less than 0.05. In addition, the N-Gain Score test result of 48% indicated that the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model was quite effective in improving students’ mathematical representation ability. Therefore, the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model had an effect on the mathematical representation ability of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 136 Pekanbaru.
