Abstract

Collaborative skills are crucial in science education at the elementary school level. The results of a preliminary study in the fifth grade at Kadudampit Public Elementary School indicate that students’ collaborative skills remain low, influenced by teacher-centered instruction, limited facilities and resources, and students’ tendency to choose close friends for group work. These conditions highlight the need to implement a more innovative and student-centered learning approach. This study aims to describe the profile of fifth-grade students’ collaboration skills and to examine the Project-Based Learning (PBL)-based STEAM approach (STEAM-PjBL) as an alternative solution in IPAS learning. The study employed a descriptive quantitative approach using a descriptive survey design involving 26 students. Data were collected through a collaboration skills questionnaire based on Greenstein’s indicators using the Guttman scale and analyzed descriptively. The results indicate that students’ collaboration skills fall into the low category at 59.81%, particularly regarding the indicators of communication, responsibility, and compromise. These findings suggest the need for learning strategies capable of enhancing student engagement and cooperation. Based on a literature review, the STEAM-PjBL approach has the potential to be a solution for IPAS learning because it encourages group work, problem-solving, and collaborative project activities. It is hoped that this study can be utilized by teachers and future researchers.
