Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of national identity in Mahmoud Darwish's poems using Roman Jakobson's semiotic approach. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with Roman Jakobson's semiotic framework. The data source consisted of three poems by Mahmoud Darwish, namely Identity Card (بطاقة هوية), On This Earth (على هذه الأرض), and I Come from There (أنا من هناك), while the research data comprised words, phrases, and poetic lines representing national identity. Data were collected through library research and analyzed based on Roman Jakobson's six elements of communication: addresser, addressee, message, context, code, and contact. The findings reveal that the representation of Palestinian national identity is constructed through ten major symbols: ʿArabī, Judhūrī, al-Zaytūn, ʿIqāl, Kūfiyyah, al-Aghānī, al-Arḍ, Filasṭīn, al-Quds, and Bilāduka. These symbols represent nationality, homeland, culture, and the collective history of the Palestinian people. Based on Roman Jakobson's communication theory, these symbols function as codes that convey messages about the struggle to preserve national identity through poetry. Therefore, Mahmoud Darwish's poems serve as a medium of communication that reinforces the collective memory and national identity of the Palestinian people.
