Abstract

Introduction: Preschool-aged children are a vulnerable group prone to sleep disturbances due to unhealthy habits such as using gadgets before bedtime and inadequate sleep environments. Sleep hygiene is a non-pharmacological intervention aimed at improving sleep quality through healthy routines and proper sleep environment management. This study aims to examine the effect of sleep hygiene on the sleep quality of preschool children Method: A pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach and no control group was employed. A total of 33 children from RA Salaful Bina participated as respondents. The intervention was administered over seven days through education and guidance on healthy sleep practices. Sleep quality was measured using the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and analyzed with the Mc Nemar test. Result: Results showed a significant improvement, with the proportion of children with poor sleep quality decreasing from 93.9% to only 3% after the intervention, while 97% achieved good sleep quality. The p-value of 0.001 and chi-square score of 28.033 indicated a statistically significant effect. Additionally, children experienced longer night time sleep (from 8–9 hours to 11–12 hours), more consistent napping, and easier morning awakenings. Conclusion: These findings suggest that sleep hygiene is an effective strategy to enhance sleep quality in preschool-aged children and should be consistently implemented with active parental involvement.
