Abstract

ABSTRACT Traffic light violations committed by motorcycle riders have continued to rise in Indonesia over the past five years. Although various regulations and the implementation of electronic ticketing have been introduced, the violation rate remains high and contributes significantly to traffic accidents, including in the city of Bandung. This study aims to analyze motorcycle riders’ intention to run red lights using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The TPB framework posits that a person’s intention is influenced by attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control (PBC). The research was conducted by distributing questionnaires to 127 motorcycle riders who reside in and actively commute within Bandung. The data were examined using validity tests, reliability tests, and multiple linear regression to determine the relationship between the three independent variables and intention. The results show that the regression model is significant, with an R² value of 0.744. Among the three variables, PBC was found to have the most significant influence on intention, while attitude and subjective norm did not show meaningful effects. These findings indicate that past experiences, riders’ overconfidence in their driving skills, weak law enforcement, and perceived low safety encourage red-light violations. This study highlights the need to strengthen law enforcement, improve electronic ticketing systems, and enhance safety education during the driver’s licensing process.
