Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) compost application on changes in soil pH at PT Citra Sawit Lestari, Bulungan Regency. The research was conducted from February to March 2026 using a quantitative descriptive method through direct measurements of soil pH before and after compost application on nine soil samples. Data were analyzed descriptively by comparing soil pH values before and after treatment. The results showed that the average soil pH decreased from 5.98 before compost application to 5.30 after application, representing an average reduction of 0.68 pH units. Soil pH before treatment ranged from 5.4 to 6.3, while after treatment it ranged from 4.9 to 6.0. The decrease in soil pH was presumably associated with the ongoing decomposition of organic matter, which produced organic acids and increased hydrogen ion (H⁺) concentration in the soil. These findings indicate that, under the conditions of this study, oil palm empty fruit bunch compost had not yet increased soil pH during the observation period. Therefore, compost maturity, application rate, and incubation period should be considered to improve the effectiveness of EFB compost as a soil amendment.
