Abstract

Hyperglycemia is characterized by elevated blood glucose levels that may progress to diabetes mellitus if left uncontrolled. This study aimed to evaluate the antihyperglycemic activity of a combination of ethanol extracts of bidara leaves (Ziziphus mauritiana Lam.) and ginseng leaves (Talinum paniculatum (Jacq.) Gaertn.), and to determine the effective dose capable of reducing blood glucose levels in mice administered dexamethasone subcutaneously for 14 days. This study employed an experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. A total of 20 mice were divided into five treatment groups: normal control, negative control (without therapy), positive control (metformin therapy), and two combination-dose groups receiving 75 mg/kg body weight of bidara leaf extract combined with 40 mg/kg body weight of ginseng leaf extract, and 100 mg/kg body weight of bidara leaf extract combined with 60 mg/kg body weight of ginseng leaf extract. The parameters observed were blood glucose levels before and after treatment. The treatment period lasted for 14 days, and blood glucose levels were measured using a glucometer. Data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA. The results showed that the combination of extracts significantly reduced blood glucose levels (p < 0.05). The highest reduction was observed in mice receiving the combination of 100 mg/kg body weight of bidara leaf extract and 60 mg/kg body weight of ginseng leaf extract. These findings indicate that the combination of bidara and ginseng leaf extracts has potential antihyperglycemic activity in dexamethasone-induced hyperglycemic mice.
