Abstract

Faith-based counseling in Muslim schools is often evaluated in terms of whether participation is associated with students’ religious and behavioral outcomes. Less attention has been given to the internal process that may explain these associations. This study conceptualizes religiosity as an internalization pathway linking school-based Islamic counseling with worship practices and moral behavior among Muslim adolescents. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted with 202 students who had participated in Islamic counseling activities at an Islamic vocational school in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. The findings showed that the implementation of Islamic counseling programs was significantly and positively associated with religiosity, worship practices, and moral behavior. Religiosity was also significantly associated with both worship practices and moral behavior. Mediation analysis indicated that religiosity partially mediated the associations between Islamic counseling and worship practices as well as between Islamic counseling and moral behavior. The model explained approximately 64 percent of the variance in worship practices and 60 percent of the variance in moral behavior. These findings suggest that the developmental contribution of Islamic counseling may depend not only on students’ exposure to religious guidance but also on their internalization of religious values as personally meaningful commitments. The study contributes a process-oriented perspective to Islamic school counseling by positioning value internalization as an important mechanism for understanding and evaluating religious and behavioral development.
