Growth and Nitrogen Uptake of Robusta Coffee Seedlings in Various Fertigation Techniques

Abstract

Healthy seedlings are one of the keys to increasing the productivity of robusta coffee plants. The nursery farmers' main problem in post-hardening coffee is the yellowing of coffee seedlings from cuttings, causing a decrease in nursery success. Farmers choose to provide nitrogen fertilizer through fertigation because it is more efficient. Inappropriate fertigation techniques caused the seedlings to turn yellow, and the percentage of seedling growth failure was higher. Not optimal nitrogen uptake caused it to happen. This research aimed to determine the best fertigation technique for the growth of robusta coffee seedlings. The study was designed using a factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD) that tested four fertigation technique systems on robusta coffee seedlings clone BP 534 with five replications. The techniques tested were without fertilization (F0), pouring technique (F1), foliar technique (F2), and root infusion technique (F3). The applied element was nitrogen at a 2% concentration. Nitrogen fertilizer is applied 2 times (each application contains 50 ml) at an interval of 10 days and is used in the morning. The results found that the flush technique tended to produce the best growth in plant height, stem diameter, and dry weight of plants. Nitrogen uptake increased 101% with the drip technique, followed the root infusion technique, which achieved a 57% increase compared to control plants. Overall, the drip technique can be recommended as the best fertigation technique for coffee nursery.
