ABSTRACT This study aims to formulate a model for strengthening community-based tourism through the integration of participatory photography, QR code storytelling, and green branding along the Towilfiets vintage bicycle tourism route in Bantar Hamlet, Banguncipto, Kulon Progo. The main issues addressed include the lack of structured community-generated visual narratives, limited access to information at tourism route and heritage sites, the absence of a curated photographic archive, and a weak sustainability-oriented destination communication identity. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using design-based research and participatory action research strategies. Preliminary data were collected through a review of program documents, an assessment of partner needs, observations of the tourism route context, and the formulation of achievement indicators based on community needs. The study resulted in the development of the Towilfiets PhotoRoute model, which consists of four main components: photovoice-based visual storytelling training, curation and exhibition of participatory photography, an interactive web-based photographic archive linked to QR codes at selected points along the route, and guidelines for green branding and market activation. The model is designed to produce 100–150 curated photographs, at least 10 QR-enabled information points, a digital repository, an exhibition catalogue, visual identity guidelines, and evaluation indicators based on QR-code scanning activity and visitor feedback. The conceptual findings indicate that strengthening a tourism destination cannot rely solely on visual promotion; rather, local communities need to be positioned as producers of knowledge, curators of local memory, and managers of destination narratives in an ethical and sustainable manner. Keywords: Participatory photography; Photovoice; QR code; Green branding; Community-based tourism; Towilfiets.
