Abstract

Overthinking has emerged as a prevalent psychological concern among younger generations, particularly adolescents and university students. Academic pressures, increasing social expectations, and intensive exposure to social media have contributed to heightened anxiety and emotional instability within these populations. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of overthinking among young people and to examine spiritual approaches to addressing it from an Islamic perspective. Employing a descriptive qualitative design with a library research approach, the study draws upon data obtained from scholarly books, peer-reviewed journal articles, academic publications, and Islamic sources relevant to mental health and spirituality. The findings indicate that overthinking is primarily associated with social pressure, persistent self-comparison facilitated by social media, and inadequate emotional regulation. From an Islamic perspective, several spiritual practices and values—including tawakkul (reliance upon Allah), dhikr (remembrance of Allah), husn al-zann (positive assumptions and thinking), and the cultivation of a balanced relationship between worldly responsibilities and spiritual needs—provide meaningful strategies for mitigating excessive rumination. These spiritual principles encourage individuals to develop acceptance, emotional regulation, positive cognitive orientations, and greater spiritual awareness when confronting uncertainty and psychological distress. The study concludes that integrating Islamic spiritual values into everyday life can contribute to greater inner tranquility, strengthen psychological resilience, and reduce excessive anxiety and overthinking among younger generations.
