Abstract

Advances in hadith studies have proliferated through diverse new approaches, yet this growth has not been matched by systematic mapping of the Arabic-language literature underpinning it. Such an imbalance creates a disconnect between thematic and methodological innovation in academic production and the actual composition of Arabic hadith collections held in libraries. This study maps characteristics and tendencies within such collections, treating them as a representation of referential sources for hadith scholarship. A qualitative descriptive method grounded in library research was applied. Primary data comprise Arabic hadith books published between 2012 and 2015 and held at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Library, compiled through systematic inventory and classified according to their scholarly characteristics. Among 13 identified titles, hadith compilations dominate with six works, followed by hadith discourse with five and ʿulūm al-ḥadīth with two. Publication dates cluster heavily around 2012, which accounts for eight titles, while 2013 contributes three, and 2014 and 2015 each add one. This distribution indicates that the collection largely sustains continuity of hadith literature as textual source material rather than tracking the diversification evident in contemporary hadith discourse. Although thematic, methodological, and conceptual works appear within the collection, they fall short of capturing the full range of developments characterizing hadith studies during this period. These findings expose a persistent gap between the dynamism of hadith scholarship and the referential literature available in libraries. Shifting research orientations have outpaced corresponding changes in library holdings, leaving Arabic literature collections available to the academic community still catching up with the field's evolving scope.
