Abstract

The rapid expansion of the gig economy and platform-based work has transformed labor markets by increasing flexibility while simultaneously intensifying labor market uncertainty and employment insecurity, raising concerns about mental well-being and emotional demands. This study aims to map and synthesize the scholarly literature on gig work under labor market uncertainty, with a particular focus on worker well-being and emotional demands in platform-based employment. A bibliometric review design is applied following the PRISMA 2020 framework, using Scopus as the database source. A total of 83 English-language peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2016 and 2025 were identified through a structured Boolean search and analyzed using publication trend analysis and VOSviewer-based thematic mapping. The findings reveal a significant increase in publications after 2020, indicating growing academic attention to gig work, employment insecurity, and worker well-being. The literature is highly interdisciplinary, spanning social sciences, business, economics, psychology, and labor studies, with major contributions from developed economies. Three dominant thematic clusters are identified: algorithmic management and job insecurity, institutional protection and labor flexibility, and mental health, precariousness, and emotional well-being. The results highlight that gig work is increasingly conceptualized as a condition of persistent labor market uncertainty with important behavioral consequences. This study contributes by advancing a behavioral–structural perspective that links platform labor conditions, employment insecurity, worker well-being, and emotional demands, while offering a foundation for interdisciplinary research and policy efforts to strengthen social protection and platform labor regulation.
