Abstract

This study evaluates the potential of activated carbon derived from oil palm mesocarp fibers (OPMF) using 0.5 M NaOH activation as a sustainable solution for the advanced treatment (polishing) of POME. Through a pyrolysis process at 250°C, the carbon produced a 16.5% yield and 4.44% moisture content, meeting the SNI 06-3730-1995 standards. The results indicate that an adsorbent dosage of 3 grams per 200 mL of sample significantly reduced COD levels by 50.03% (to 14,261 mg/L), although the final value has not yet met the quality standards of Permen LHK No. 5 of 2014. However, this activated carbon proved highly effective in improving acidity levels, increasing the effluent's pH from 5.37 to 7.31, thereby successfully.
