Abstract

This research explores the distinctions between the verbs help and assist regarding their frequency, semantic preference, and semantic prosody in both formal and informal English through a corpus-based methodology. The information was gathered from chosen corpora that represent various language registers. The results indicate that help is utilized more often in casual situations, whereas assist is mainly employed in formal environments. Regarding semantic preference, help usually pairs with routine activities and personal situations, while assist is frequently linked to formal and professional settings. Additionally, the examination of semantic prosody indicates that both verbs typically possess neutral to positive connotations; however, assist tends to convey a more formal and professional undertone in contrast to help. These results emphasize that while help and assist are frequently viewed as equivalent, they vary greatly in usage based on context, collocation, and register. This research enhances comprehension of vocabulary selection in English, especially for learners and in academic writing.
