Abstract

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine-metabolic disorder among women of reproductive age, yet comprehensive data on its drug utilization pattern in Indonesian regional hospitals remain limited, particularly in East Java. This study aimed to describe the drug utilization pattern in PCOS patients at RSUD Haji East Java Province during 2020-2025. A descriptive retrospective design was applied using total sampling of 57 outpatient medical records meeting the inclusion criteria, analyzed descriptively using Microsoft Excel. Results showed that monotherapy was the predominant treatment pattern (70.2%), with hormonal therapy being the most frequently used drug class (78.9%). The most commonly prescribed drugs were norethisterone 5 mg (43.9%) and Cycloprogynova (40.4%), while metformin was used in 14.0% of patients and clomiphene citrate (Diphten) as an ovulation-inducing agent in 12.3% of patients. Doses and frequencies were mostly consistent with standard literature, with two frequency variations found for Diane 35 and Microgynon, reflecting the prescribing physician's clinical judgment. Documented adverse effects were found in only one patient (1.8%), consisting of dizziness potentially associated with metformin. All patients (100%) showed clinical improvement in the form of menstrual return within 2 to 6 days after therapy. It is concluded that PCOS drug utilization at RSUD Haji is dominated by hormonal therapy with favorable clinical response, although the completeness of medical record documentation should be improved to support comprehensive therapy monitoring.
