Abstract

This development research aims to produce a Discovery Learning-based Student Worksheet on social arithmetic material for seventh-grade junior high school that is valid, practical, and effective in improving students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. The background of this research is the low problem-solving ability of Indonesian students based on PISA results and the limited teaching materials that encourage independent discovery learning. The research method uses Research and Development (R&D) with a 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate) modified to the develop stage with limited trials. The research subjects were 15 seventh-grade students of Al-Asror Islamic Junior High School in East Lampung. Research instruments include expert validation sheets, teacher and student practicality questionnaires, and problem-solving ability tests (pretest-posttest). The results showed: (1) the developed student worksheet was declared very valid by material experts (88.89%) and media experts (88.57%); (2) student worksheet was declared very practical based on teacher (92.77%) and student (91.21%) responses; (3) student worksheet was effective in improving problem-solving skills with an N-Gain value of 0.57 (medium category). The student worksheet product has the characteristics of containing six Discovery Learning syntaxes integrated with Polya's problem-solving steps, using communicative language, and presenting contextual problems. In conclusion, the Discovery Learning-based student worksheet developed is feasible to facilitate the improvement of students' problem-solving skills in social arithmetic material.
