Abstract

The article examines the cultural adaptation of nonverbal meaning in English and Uzbek tourism communication, focusing on the transfer of culturally marked communicative behaviour across linguocultural environments. The study approaches adaptation not as the mechanical replacement of one gesture or behavioural pattern with another, but as the preservation of its communicative function under different cultural conventions. Particular attention is paid to functional equivalence, cultural acceptability, pragmatic adequacy and the interpretation of culture-specific nonverbal units. The comparative analysis demonstrates that formally different nonverbal expressions may perform equivalent communicative functions, whereas outwardly similar signs may acquire divergent cultural meanings. On this basis, cultural adaptation is interpreted as a process of balancing the source meaning, the target culture's behavioural norms and the intended communicative effect. The findings contribute to the study of nonverbal mediation in intercultural tourism interaction and provide a functional framework for interpreting culturally marked behaviour.
