Abstract

Sunan Ampel's tomb in Surabaya is one of the pilgrimage sites with important religious, historical, and social significance. Although tomb pilgrimage is generally accepted as a religious practice, its meaning can differ based on the pattern of religious understanding of the figure who guides the community. This study aims to analyze the meaning of the pilgrimage to Sunan Ampel's tomb based on the views of Kiai Badar Thomthomi and Habib Hasan bin Faruq Alkaff. This study uses an empirical legal method with a comparative approach. The main data was obtained through interviews with Kiai Badar Thomthomi and Habib Hasan bin Faruq Alkaff, while supporting data was obtained through literature and documentation studies. The results of the study show that both figures view pilgrimage as a means of getting closer to Allah, praying for the dead, remembering death, and strengthening faith. The difference lies in the pressure point of meaning. According to Kiai Badar Thomthomi, in pilgrimage, pilgrims must pray for the dead and not make a place to ask for the deceased. Meanwhile, Habib Hasan bin Faruq Alkaff put greater emphasis on the spiritual dimension, tawasul, wasilah, tabarruk, self-reflection, and the continuity of the archipelago's Islamic tradition. Nevertheless, both reject the belief that the wali has independent power beyond the will of Allah.
