Abstract

Welding is a metal joining method widely applied in various industrial fields. The quality of welded joints is strongly influenced by the welding method used. This study aims to compare the effect of electric welding and acetylene welding on tread plate in terms of tensile strength, micro-macro structure, and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) results. The research employed an experimental approach in the laboratory. Tensile testing was conducted to determine yield point and Yield Stress, while macro and microstructural observations were carried out to analyze metallurgical changes. NDT was performed using Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT) and Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT) to detect possible defects. The results indicate that electric welding produced better joint quality compared to acetylene welding. Specimens welded with electricity showed yield points ranging from 10,045–15,476 N and Yield Stress between 197.663–304.527 MPa, with fewer defects observed. In contrast, acetylene welding produced more varied results with significant defects such as cracks and large porosity, which reduced joint quality. This research demonstrates that electric welding provides superior tensile strength and joint reliability compared to acetylene welding.
