Abstract

The continuously increasing use of natural aggregates in concrete production drives the utilization of more environmentally friendly alternative materials, such as waste glass as a partial replacement for fine aggregates. This study aims to analyze the effect of using waste glass on concrete slump and compressive strength, and to compare concrete performance under normal water immersion and sulfuric acid solution immersion. An experimental approach was employed using waste glass variations of 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% by weight of fine aggregates. Cylindrical specimens (10 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height) were immersed for 21 days in either normal water or a sulfuric acid solution (pH 4), followed by slump and compressive strength testing. The results showed slump values of 6 cm, 5 cm, 7.5 cm, and 7 cm for normal concrete and the 10%, 20%, and 30% waste glass variations, respectively. The highest compressive strength was achieved with the 10% waste glass variation: 27.76 MPa for normal water immersion and 24.27 MPa for sulfuric acid solution immersion. These values represent increases of 62.6% and 29.9%, respectively, compared to normal concrete. Compressive strength tended to decrease with 20% and 30% waste glass content, although the values remained higher than those of normal concrete. Thus, the 10% waste glass variation is the optimum choice for partially replacing fine aggregates, as it yielded the highest compressive strength under both immersion conditions.
