Abstract

Inland waters within Fisheries Management Area of the Republic of Indonesia for Inland Waters (WPPNRI PD) play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity and sustainable fisheries resources. Halmahera Island, which is part of WPPNRI PD 413, is known for its high freshwater biodiversity, including the river prawn Macrobrachium lar. This study examined the abundance and habitat characteristics of M. lar in inland waters of Halmahera Island. Field surveys were conducted at three river systems representing western, central, and southern Halmahera. The highest relative abundance observed in southern Halmahera. The results indicate that variations in relative abundance are closely associated with habitat heterogeneity. Southern Halmahera was characterized by higher elevation, mixed sandy–rocky substrates, stable dissolved oxygen, suitable water temperature, and relatively dense tree canopy closure. These conditions likely provide favorable microhabitats, thermal stability, and reduced light intensity for M. lar. Overall, the findings demonstrate that the distribution and abundance of M. lar are strongly influenced by the integrated effects of physical, chemical, and structural habitat features. Maintaining the integrity of river habitats, particularly tree canopy cover along river corridors, is essential for sustaining freshwater prawn populations and supporting sustainable inland fisheries management within WPPNRI PD 413, Halmahera Island.
