Abstract

Household waste management, particularly used cooking oil, remains an environmental issue that requires early attention. Students’ understanding of the importance of waste management and the environmental impacts of improper used cooking oil disposal still needs to be improved. Students at SDN Klabang Agung, Tegalampel Subdistrict, Bondowoso Regency, received environmental education and empowerment through the production of aromatherapy candles to optimize the use of used cooking oil. The approach involved preparation, implementation, evaluation, and follow-up through outreach, demonstrations, and hands-on practice in making aromatherapy candles. Nine third- and fourth-grade students from SDN Klabang Agung participated in this activity. The results showed that the students were very enthusiastic and active during the learning process. Observations indicated that the students were able to answer simple questions related to the material and follow the steps for making aromatherapy candles well. Product assessment showed that Group 1 scored 90 and Group 2 scored 85, with an average of 87.5, which falls into the “very good” category. In addition, the students gained a better understanding of the use of used cooking oil as a valuable product and its hazards to the environment. Through hands-on activities, the students were able to follow the steps for making aromatherapy candles well and demonstrated greater concern for the environment. From the outset, this program provided a contextual learning experience that enhanced the students’ skills, creativity, and environmental awareness.
